Paris, Jean-Baptiste Garnier, 1752. 8vo. (4), XLVIII, 852 pp. Black morocco binding by Dubuisson for the Dauphin, Louis de France. Covers richly gilt with framing plate-stamp and several individual stamps. Spine with five raised bands, compartments richly gilt with intricate designs of entwined bands and fleurs-de-lis. Giltstamped title to spine; inner dentelle and leading edges gilt. Brocade endpapers; all edges gilt. In half calf box with gilt fillets Splendid binding by Pierre-Paul Dubuisson, successor to Antoine-Michel Padeloup as “Relieur du Roi”, for the 23-year-old Dauphin. In its immaculate beauty and abundance, the large framing plate-stamp used by Dubuisson for this present binding constitutes “a model of decorative design in the Louis XV style, with all the allurements and hyperboles of Rocaille” (cf. Fürstenberg, in v. Arnim). In contrast to all other Dubuisson bindings available for comparison (cf. references below) showing the same framing plate-stamp, the space between the latter and the Dauphin’s supralibros in the center has in the present binding been filled in with numerous additional stamps, providing a perfect example for the ‘horror vacui’ so typical of Rococo. via inlibris.com GORGEOUS binding!
